Environmental Summit - Huge Success
Searles Valley Minerals Wins Sustainability Award - Updated 10/23/08
The Industrial Environmental Association, the California Manufacturers & Technology Association and the Chemical Industry Council of California's 2008 Environmental Summit is now history. The theme for this year's conference was "Navigating in an Ever-Greening World." The conference was held at the Catamaran Hotel in San Diego. Nearly 450 people were in attendance this year, the largest number in the history of the conference.
Senator Joe Simitian and Assembly Member Mike Feuer, authors respectively of SB 509 and AB 1879, the successful Green Chemistry Bills; Assembly Member Cameron Smyth, Vice-Chair of Assembly ES&TM; and Maureen Gorsen, Director of CA Department of Toxic Substances Control and a primary architect for the Governor's Green Chemistry Initiative spoke as part of the Green Chemistry Track #2 on the conference program. Track 2 was arranged and facilitated by CICC.
CICC also gratefully acknowledges the excellent participation and contributions of the following speakers: Jeff Sickenger (KP Advocates), Richard Denison, Ph.D. (Environmental Defense Fund), Sarah Brozena (American Chemical Council), Jim Willis (U.S.EPA) Jeff Wong, Ph.D. (DTSC) John McCabe (ENSR-AECOM), Randy Fischback (Dow), Karl Palmer (DTSC) and Tim Ogburn (DTSC).
Special thanks to Tom Jacob who helped organize and moderate two very significant panels on green chemistry regulation and nanotechnology.
In the days ahead the PowerPoint presentation from the conference will be made available on-line. Please monitor www.cicc.org for details.
Kudos go out to CICC member, Roland Buchs, Director of Energy and Utilities (Searles Valley Minerals). Mr. Buchs, on behalf of his team at SVM, accepted an IEA/CMTA/CICC Sustainability Award during the conference luncheon on Tuesday. The company was recognized for its energy efficiency project which significantly reduced natural gas usage at West End and thereby resulted in a large reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. CICC says, "Congratulations Searles Valley Minerals on a job well done!"
