California "Green Chemistry Coalition" Takes Position in Advance of Informational Hearing

Updated 06/28/06 Sacramento - In a letter to Senator Joseph Simitian, Chairman of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, 14 industry groups unite to identify opportunities and short-comings associated with the UC Berkeley Report

"Collectively, we fully support science and risk based chemicals management policies that simultaneously protect health and the environment, assure product safety and promote innovation in the marketplace in California. We recognize that the Report iterates a number of questions about the adequacy of our current regulatory structure and our industry's incentives for innovation in delivering on those goals. We are hopeful that a multi-stakeholder dialog can enable us to explore these questions more fully and chart a path forward from this Report - a path that advances health, environmental protection and economic growth."

The letter also enunciates shortcomings in the Report as viewed by the regulated community.  "The Report's assessment of the current chemical control statutes and regulations and product stewardship activities in the US and California is incomplete and does not do justice to the breadth and depth of protection that is currently in place. It also downplays significant advances in the development of information about chemicals that has been underway for several years. Further, the Report's assessment of the impact of chemicals on the health of Americans is seriously over-stated in light of our scientific understanding."  more..
