New California Legislative Session Officially Begins

12/04/06 - Legislature Recesses until January 3, 2007

Sacramento, CA - With the swearing-in ceremony at noon December 4th, the biennial session (2007 - 2008) of the California Legislature officially got underway.  Thirty-four (34) new legislators took the oath of office for the first time.  Democrats maintain lopsided majorities in both houses of the legislature: 48-32 in the Assembly, and 25-15 in the Senate.  Following the ceremonies, the Legislature recessed until January 3, 2007.

Despite public talk of bi-partisanship and an unusual invitation to (and appearance by) the Governor, backroom politics and intrigue continue.  In the Senate Republican caucus, Minority Leader Dick Ackerman (R, Irvine) narrowly fended-off a challenge by fellow Republican Jim Battin (R, La Quinta).  Party conservatives continue to be concerned the Governor may be getting too close to the Democrats and their own Senate and Assembly leaders have been too accommodating.  Last month, Assembly Republicans dumped San Diego Assemblyman George Plescia in favor of Mike Villines from Clovis as Minority Leader.

While the real work of the legislature will not begin until January 2007, the bill introduction period is now open.  Members are free to introduce new legislation, including resurrected measures which failed during previous sessions.  It is important to note if legislation from the previous session is reintroduced, it begins the process anew rather than picking up where it left off.  For more information - click on the links below.
